OASE presents a programme series on Srefidensi

16/10/2026

Srefidensi, celebrated on 25 November, marks the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975. It is a moment to reflect on the country’s history, celebrate its many cultures and honour the stories, traditions and communities that shape Surinamese identity.

This year’s Srefidensi programming includes the following:

‍

Fri 6 Nov | OASE Invites… Jaasir Linger | Registration

‍

Sun 22 Nov | Sunday Filmclub: Wan Pipel | Registration

Wan Pipel (1976) is the quintessential Surinamese film classic by director Pim de la Parra. The story follows Roy, a young Surinamese man who returns to Paramaribo after completing his studies in the Netherlands. There, he faces a choice between two worlds: his Dutch lover or his Surinamese roots. The film explores themes such as identity, love, and the search for a new beginning.

About Srefidensi

For many, Srefidensi is both a celebration of freedom and an opportunity to reflect on what independence means across generations and within the Surinamese diaspora. Through music, food, dance and shared stories, Surinamese culture continues to evolve, connecting people to their roots while making space for new perspectives and experiences.

Why at OASE?

Here at OASE we create space for cultural celebrations, curated with the community rather than for the community. We create a space for people to come together to share stories, discover traditions and celebrate the living cultural heritage that connects us.
