As a Dutch-born Curaçaoënaar, Luchandro Franca have felt disconnected from my culture and roots. To seek understanding of Antillean traditions and their origins, I collaborated with individuals who share the same cultural background. By talking to different generations, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of the roots that shape my identity, and how the importance of these traditions within the newer generation has lessened or faded away.

Through my work, I hope to uncover the origins of these traditions and their influence in shaping the cultural foundation I was raised within, while encouraging others to engage more deeply with their own traditions and heritage.

About Dia di Tula‍

Dia di Tula is a national holiday in Curaçao, commemorating the slave uprising led by Tula on August 17, 1795. Tula fought for freedom, equality, and human dignity, becoming a symbol of resistance and courage. Today, the day is honored through ceremonies, cultural events, and education, celebrating Curaçao's history and the ongoing importance of freedom and justice.

On this special day, we come together to honour the legacy of Curaçaoan resistance leader Tula, who led the island's largest revolt against slavery in 1795. His fight for freedom, justice and human dignity continues to inspire generations.
