¡Viva la Frida!

As part of our programme celebrating Mexican culture, OASE presents ¡Viva la Frida!, an exhibition by Sergio Cruz and Richard Beukelaar honouring the life and work of Frida Kahlo. This exhibition will be on display until mid-April. Part of The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love, OASE’s series celebrating Mexican culture.

The exhibition brings together handcrafted costumes by Sergio Cruz and photography by Richard Beukelaar. The models in the series reflect themes found in Kahlo’s work, including trans and drag identities and bodily diversity.

About Frida Kahlo

Kahlo’s work explored the female body, sexuality, autonomy and the expectations placed on women in society. Her home, La Casa Azul in Mexico City, was surrounded by a courtyard garden that served as her sanctuary and a lasting source of inspiration.

With this exhibition, we celebrate the creativity, resilience and cultural richness that Mexican traditions continue to bring to communities around the world.

The exhibition is free to visit during OASE's Kantine opening hours.

Als onderdeel van ons tweeweekse programma rond Mexicaanse cultuur presenteert OASE ¡Viva la Frida!, een expositie van Sergio Cruz en Richard Beukelaar die het leven en werk van de Mexicaanse kunstenares Frida Kahlo eert. Deze expositie is tot midden April te zien.

De tentoonstelling brengt handgemaakte kostuums van Sergio Cruz samen met fotografie van Richard Beukelaar. De modellen in de serie sluiten aan bij thema’s uit Kahlo’s werk, zoals trans- en dragidentiteiten en lichamelijke diversiteit.

Over Frida Kahlo

In haar werk verkende Frida Kahlo thema’s als het vrouwelijk lichaam, seksualiteit, autonomie en de verwachtingen die de samenleving aan vrouwen stelt. Haar huis La Casa Azul in Mexico-Stad werd omringd door een binnentuin die voor haar een plek van rust en inspiratie was.

Met deze expositie vieren we de creativiteit, veerkracht en culturele kracht die Mexicaanse tradities nog altijd brengen naar gemeenschappen over de hele wereld.

De expositie is gratis te bezoeken tijdens de openingstijden van OASE’s Kantine.
