Zoals Jij Mij Ziet is an analogue portrait series by Rotterdam photographer Mark Redan, capturing Rotterdammers alongside their dogs. Through these intimate portraits, Redan explores the unexpected ways people and their dogs resemble each other, and what this might reveal about how we see ourselves and others.

Owners and their dogs often resemble each other in the way they stand, look and move through the world. It makes you smile, perhaps even wonder. Wonder is the opposite of judgement: a sudden recognition of the extraordinary in the ordinary, leading to a deeper sense of awe and a desire to understand or appreciate more. It allows us to see the world with fresh eyes. It was from this sense of wonder that Redan began Zoals Jij Mij Ziet (As You See Me).
Redan deliberately chose analogue photography. You can't take 150 pictures and simply pick the best one. You have to look carefully, slow down and work with what comes your way. Only then does the story of the person in front of the camera unfold. Not a polished story, but a real one. About what we carry with us, and what we'd rather not show. About the messiness of life, loves that hurt, and dogs that are sometimes the only ones who truly listen.
Look. Let yourself wonder. And perhaps, in looking at them, you'll recognise something of yourself.

Zoals jij mij ziet is een analoge portretserie van Rotterdammers met hun hond. Niet omdat honden leuk zijn, maar omdat ze iets blootgeven.
Baasje en hond lijken vaak op elkaar. In de manier waarop ze staan, kijken en zich door de wereld bewegen. Het doet je glimlachen, misschien zelfs verwonderen. Verwondering is de tegenhanger van oordeel. De plotselinge erkenning van het buitengewone in het gewone, die leidt tot een diep gevoel van ontzag en een verlangen om meer te begrijpen of te waarderen.Het laat ons de wereld met frisse ogen zien. Vanuit die verwondering begon Redan aan Zoals Jij Mij Ziet.
Redan koos bewust voor analoge fotografie. Je kan geen 150 foto’s maken en simpelweg de beste kiezen. Je moet goed kijken, rustig zijn, en nemen wat er komt. Pas dan ontvouwt zich het verhaal van de geportretteerde. Geen gepolijst verhaal, maar een echte. Over wat je meedraagt, wat je liever niet laat zien. Over de rotzooi in je leven, met liefdes die pijn doen, en honden die soms de enigen zijn die echt luisteren.
Kijk. Laat je verwonderen. En misschien herken je, in het kijken naar hen, iets van jezelf.
